We are delighted to announce our schedule for Heritage Week 2022, with an event each day for this national celebration (August 13th – 21st). See full details below. Also included are details for three online events that are being organised by Dark Sky Ireland and the Mayo Dark Sky Park.

 

Night Walk | Letterkeen | Saturday August 13th

Start Time: 9.30pm

Description: To celebrate being Mayo Dark Sky Park we will be hosting a night walk Letterkeen starting at the Bothy at 9.30pm. We will walk the new Vary’s Loop (2.5km) and if conditions allow enjoy some starry skies and the odd meteor in the Mayo Dark Sky Park. If you are joining us, remember to dress warmly!

Ranger Led Hike | Jamesie’s Well, Letterkeen | Sunday August 14th

Start Time: 10.00am

Description:

Meeting at the Brogan Carroll Bothy from where we will walk the forest roads and fire breaks to the three spring wells known as Jamesie’s Well. Locals believe that the crisp clear water from these wells can help cure kidney stones! You will enjoy splendid views across Wild Nephin National Park as we trek in the shadown of Mount Eagle and Birreencorragh. Walk will be approximately 12km in distance and 4-5 hours in duration. Illustrated History Talk | Visitor Centre | Monday August 15th  

Start Time: 2pm

Description: Join us in our Education Room at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre for an illustrated talk that will bring us on a journey back in time with stories from the Nephin Beg Mountains, which make up the backbone of our wonderful National Park.

Wild Child Club | Meet the Ranger | Visitor Centre | Tuesday August 16th

Start Time: 2.30pm

Description: Ever wondered about the day to day work of a Conservation Ranger, well now is your chance! Come and meet our National Park Ranger and find out all about their work. This is a fun family friendly workshop. We welcome drop-ins but booking advisable to guarantee a space. Please book by phone 098 49888 or email ballycroyvisitorcentre@housing.gov.ie

Siúil Linn! | Siulóid ar Chosán Cósta Sliabh an Chloiginn | Dé Céadaoin 17 Lúnasa

Start Time: 3pm

Description: Siúil Linn! Siulóid treoiraithe ar Chosán Cósta Sliabh an Chloiginn i bPáirc Náisiúnta Néifinne Fiáine. Tar amach le haghaidh siúlóid éasca 2km cois farraige – áit a bhuaileann an phortach leis an gcladach. Beidh tú in éindí le treoraí na páirce náisiúnta. Beidh muid ag caint as gaeilge faoi chúltúr, stair agus fiadhúlra na háite. Oiriúnach do chách. Bígí linn!

Wild Child Club | Our Blanket Bogs | Visitor Centre | August 18th

Start Time: 2.30pm

Description: Join our National Park Guide Team to find out all about our wonderfully brilliant blanket bogs, why they are so special, what lives in them and how we can protect them. Pollinator Workshop | Visitor Centre | August 19th

Start Time: 12 noon

Description: Join one of our Conservation Rangers to learn about pollinator diversity and the wildflowers they feed on, how to identify and record them, and get involved with recording biodiversity.

Bat Walk | Newport Town Outreach | August 20th

Start Time: 8.30pm

Description: Join us for an after-dark walk around Newport to seek out bats with our Education Guides. The starting point for this family friendly event is Hotel Newport at 8.30 pm and is the perfect end to the summer holidays. We will make our way along the quay to the beautiful woodland of Princess Grace Park and finishing up along the Black Oak River. Learn about Ireland’s amazing bat species and how to spot them. Bring a high-vis and a torch (if you have them).

Poetry Walk | Ballycroy Visitor Centre | August 21st

Start Time: 2.00pm

Description: Join us on a walk along the magical 2km Tóchar Daithí Bán at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre we will explore the trail and recite a number of poems that were inspired by the lands of the National Park and the surrounding area.

Online Events | Mayo Dark Sky Park & Dark Sky Ireland

Citizen Science and Dark Skies – Make it Count! | Saturday August 13th

Start Time: 5pm

Description:

Heritage Week coincides with the peak of the Perseids Meteor Shower 2022. To help you know what to look for in the sky, Dark Sky Ireland have teamed up with Brendan Owens, Expert astronomer and Public Engagement Manager at the Institute of Physics. To kick start the Citizen Science campaign, Brendan will host a short webinar to explain some handy tips and tools to help you navigate your way in the sky and where to log your observations. After the webinar and armed with this information, you’ll be ready to head outside on a clear dark night and start recording what you see. This is an activity for all the family and one you can do any night during Heritage Week or into the future. We encourage you to embrace Ireland’s natural heritage of the night sky, keep looking up and let us know what you see!

Note: This is perfect preparation for the night walk to be held in Letterkeen at 9.30pm (see details above).

 

Protecting Dark Skies in Ireland | Monday 15th August

Ecological Consequences of Light Pollution – a webinar with Travis Longcore | Wednesday 17th August

Start Time: 7pm

Join special guest Dr Travis Longcore – Ecological Consequences of Light Pollution.  Dr Longcore is a leading expert on the environmental and ecological effects of night lighting. His seminal work “Ecological Light Pollution” (Longcore and Rich 2004) and 2006 co-edited book Ecological Consequences of Artificial Night Lighting (Rich and Longcore 2006) have come to define this new and rapidly growing research area in ecology.
