Art Commission

The Office of Public Works (OPW), National Park & Wildlife Services and Mayo County Council’s Arts Service are delighted to announce that the visual artist Susan Mannion has been selected for the public art commission at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre at Wild Nephin National Park.

The Artist

Susan with Plate and Vessel

Susan is a talented visual artist based in Boyle, who specialises in copper enamel work, a technique that has been used since the 13th century BC; and print making.

The final artwork will be installed on the large external white wall to the right of the main entrance of the Visitor Centre. It will measure approximately 7m wide by 4m high and it will be made of ten panels of enamelled steel depicting a scene from either the park or the night sky above Wild Nephin National Park, which is also Ireland’s first Dark Sky Park. Each panel will have many layers of coloured glass hand sifted to its surface and the panels will then be fired in a kiln at 850-900°C. There may be as many as twenty to thirty different colours applied to create the finished panels and the panels will need to be placed in the kiln several times.

For more information on this beautiful art practise see this information video (YouTube)

Susan planned to present a unique exhibition of her art practice, including enamel work, at the Ballycroy Visitor Centre for the month of October but due to Level 3 COVID-19 (Coronavirus) this exhibition in not accessible at the moment.

Community engagement is an important part of this public art commission.  Susan is interested in hearing about your experiences of living near or visiting the National Park and would like to learn more about what the Park means to the community, what people love about this amazing place, and also about your concerns for the environment and the future.
